A cat collar has
practical uses for you and bonding for your kitty... The underlying meaning here is that there's more to a cat collar than the official identification, or the alert sound of a jingling bell, that hangs from the little loop characteristic of the adornment around our pets neck. When I searched the online edition of the Merriam-Webster dictionary there was no entry for 'cat collar'. Searching Wikipedia, the free online encyclopedia, yielded the same result. Nada. But if you type in 'collar' in Wikipedia, this is a portion of what you get: ... "A collar can also be a piece of material put around the neck of an animal, typically a pet, for control, identification, or other purposes. Identification tags and medical information is often placed on collars. Collars are also useful for controlling the animal, as they provide a handle for grabbing.
A collar sometimes contains (or has attached) a GPS tracking unit, to locate a lost animal. Alternatively a "backpack" version is attached to a harness." Doing an online Merriam-Webster search gave a result that was much more extensive, but can be summed up in the following excerpt: "a band, strip, or chain worn around the neck: as a : a band that serves to finish or decorate the neckline of a garment b : a short necklace c : a band placed about the neck of an animal d : a part of the harness of draft animals fitted over the shoulders and taking strain when a load is drawn e : an indication of control : a token of subservience f : a protective or supportive device (as a brace or cast) worn around the neck". Does anyone really need to have the word 'collar' defined for them? Probably not because we have literally "grown up" with the term. Most children have experienced, as they are being dressed and readied for the day or to go to some special event, having their collar straightened as the final touch to being made presentable. That moment is a particularly bonding occasion when finally, at last, the totally business-like bath, the tugging and pulling of clothes and brushing of hair comes to an end with a smiling approval and pat on the cheek from the one person who means the most to you... your mom (or in some cases, your dad). Fast forward to today. That pat on the cheek is now a distant memory. But, the glow of the affection is still warm and we tend to 'pass it on' to let those around us know how much we care for them. That goes for the cat, too. Moreover, the cat recognizes it as well. It never fails to amaze me how responsive a cat (or dog) is to the attention you give them when placing a collar around their neck. Of course there are those cats who will go bananas trying to get out of a collar, a funny sight in itself. Generally, though, well adjusted cats that you have a strong, loving relationship with will accept the cat collar placement and seem to view it as a bonding ritual between the two of you.
Dressing her properly gives you and
your feline friend the ability to interact on a personal level. After all,
she wears it willingly (but, if she doesn't you
might want to take notice of that reaction), while we tug and pull at it as
if we are doting over a child’s new winter coat before they go off to school. Mostly, though, she just loves to be admired,
and we are more than willing to oblige her.
